Different Genres of Yaoi Lately, shonen-ai and yaoi manga and anime has blossomed into the American anime mainstream, with hundreds of thousands of fan-girls mooning over the latest episode or edition of boy-love. Although in Japan yaoi has a subtly different meaning than shonen-ai, in the States, they are pretty much interchangeable. Although the different relationships of boy-love depicted in yaoi can take many different forms, they tend to fall into a few established categories.
High-School Romance: This genre is one of the most popular, as with any other general genre of anime. Some examples include Eerie Queerie, Sukisho, and Kizuna: Bonds of Love (released in the States as Be Beautiful).
Younger Boy/ Mysterious Older Man: This is a popular genre. It frequently dips close to pedophilia for the older man. Gravitation features high-school age Shuichi falling for the older, mysterious Eiri Yuki. Loveless features 12-year-old catboy Ritsuka and his late brother’s former friend and possibly lover Soubi. Another example is Mirage of Blaze.
Partners: This genre features, typically, two adult men working in a blue-collar job (although sometimes their blue collar job involved something magical or fantastic) who fall in love. FAKE is one example that takes place entirely in the real world, two detectives falling in love.
My Sexual Harrassment is a fairly hardcore story about a young executive sleeping his way to the top. Descendants of Darkness features paranormal detectives.
Continuation of the characteristics of Yaoi men.
Uke comes from the verb ukeru, which translates as “to receive”. It directly refers to the role, which the uke character plays in the relationship. There are a number of characteristics which can be found within these characters. While there are exceptions, these characteristics tend to be the standard when creating these characters.
Physically these characters tend to be smaller. They also tend to be slender rather than muscular. If they are muscular, they tend to be the type gained from work rather than bodybuilding. They tend to be drawn with slightly feminine features or may even have feminine features. They tend to have longer hair, softer features especially jaw lines and tend to have larger eyes that are more expressive.
Uke characters tend to be younger; they are often inexperienced and rarely have relationships with women. They tend to be gay in the traditional sense though there are exceptions to this rule. They are often delicate emotionally and are often put into “feminine roles” such as secretary or teacher. They are often portrayed as “housewives”
They may hold positions that are not as established as their Seme counter parts. They are usually pursued. It is uncommon to see a uke pursue a Seme. They tend to have a stronger knowledge of domestic skills. They also tend to be lacking in confidence or assertiveness in many cases.
This does not mean that there are not exceptions to the standard guidelines. They can be older or more established than their seme counterparts. Since Yaoi or Boys love, is primarily written by women writers and artists for women readers the characterizations tend to follow Seme characters in the stronger “male” role while Uke characters in the weaker “female” roles.
Hey guys, wrote some helpful info for you new Yaoi fans!
The word Seme refers to the aggressive role in a male/male relationship. It is derived from the term Semeru, which in Japanese means, “to attack”. The characteristics of a Seme as found in Yaoi or Shonen-ai are fairly specific. While there are at times deviations these characteristics are more the rule than the exception. While the Japanese refer to these types of relationships as BL or Boys love, it is more commonly referred to in Western society as Yaoi. This genre is primarily written by women and geared towards a female audience. This is displayed in the characterizations of both aspects of the relationship portrayed in the Graphic novel, novel or other literary work.
Seme characteristics include physically large or strong males, usually confident and their facial features are drawn to have stronger lines, shorter hair, and the eyes are draw to appear smaller. Characteristics of these characters in literature also have them as being older and taller. They also tend to be professional or established in a career. Occasionally, you will see a younger, less mature, non-established male as a Seme. However, these characters are still usually meet the physical characteristics.
Seme personality characteristics tend to be strong, confident; they are responsible for the pursuit of the Uke in the story line. They are generally knowledgeable or have experience with male/male relationships. They may or may not have been married, have or have had relationships with women or in some cases are married. It is also common for the Seme to acknowledge his male partner as a special exception.
Bored; was surfing some Youtube and found Yaoi-ish scenes of Dir en Grey
My fav <3
Ahhh!!! Going to have sweet dreams of Toshiya Kissing Kyo tonight
I made my first Yaoi Youtube video!!!
You should check it out! Overall I find it pretty good considering I had no idea what I was doing and plus I had some troubles with the original music. Originally I used Bloc Party’s Ares [Villains Remix] but due to the whole youtube and WMG and their rules with copyrighted music xp I had to audioswap the video or else it would’ve just been muted. There’s nothing better than the sound of nothingness, while watching a Yaoi video.
